My mail saga & Gmail
I’ve had my primary email address for many years. Possibly around 8 years or so. Because of the number of spammers that got hold of the email address, it’s been pretty impossible to use. I’ve used Thunderbird’s spam feature to fight it (works but still a lot of work), Spamassassin on Qmail (requires maintenance etc, still not perfect) and lately I’ve tried 1&1 mail hosting.
I chose 1&1 because they’re supporing IMAP for a decent price, which I use a lot and are a pretty big and credible hosting provider. It seems that 1&1 has a decent spam filtering that learns spam, etc… but no matter how many spam lessons i’ve given it, it had hard time learning all of it and I was still ending up with quite a bit of spam on daily basis.
This weekend a friend suggested Google Apps, saying they have great spam filtering. I’ve already been hosting a few domains on Google Apps, but not an email address with this amount of spam. So I decided to bite the bullet, gave up IMAP functionality and give it a try.
I’m absolutely amazed. Within first 24 hours I had around 350 spam messages, about 20 legit messages and only about 5 additonal spam messages that ended up in my inbox.
I can now use my account.
Cheers to Google.
