Fix for Windows Update error 8007051a on Vista

Took me a bit to figure this one out, thought I’d share.

Issue:
Receiving Error 8007051a when trying to perform Windows Update on Windows Vista. Microsoft knowledge base doesn’t seem to contain any useful information, neither does googling…

Solution:

  1. Locate “C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
  2. Take ownership of the file
  3. Give yourself (or a group you’re in, like Administrators) full permissions to the file
  4. Rename the file to something like “pending.xml.old
  5. Reboot and run Windows Update
  6. Watch Windows Update find those updates you’ve been missing. Done!

This worked beautifully for me on a Vista Ultimate x64.

Cheers,

ACDSee Unicode Support Workaround

If you’ve ever tried to use any version of ACDSee to open a file with unicode characters in the name, you’d find that ACDSee simply doesn’t support unicode characters. That even includes the latest ACDSee Photo Manager 10 and ACDSee Pro 2.

But today I’ve stumbled upon a workaround on ACDSee forums posted earlier this month and it worked beautifully. Thanks to the guy who took time to figure this out.

UPDATE: ACDSee Pro 2.5 with native unicode support has been released

Thunderbird: How to sort mail accounts?

Scenario

You have more then 2 email accounts from various email providers like your ISP, Gmail, Google for Domains, Yahoo, etc…  Some of them are used for personal purposes, some of them for business, some of them even belong to your significant other. Checking all these on regular basis by opening web browser/logging in is a pain in the buttom so you’ve chosen to use Mozilla Thunderbird to consolidate. Here comes the issue. Because these accounts were added at different times, they’re now not in the order you’d like to see them in. Thunderbird doesn’t have a “Sort Accounts” functionality. What to do?!

Solution

Extension called Folderpane Tools came as a real saver. Glad I didn’t have to start finding and hacking Thunderbird setting files…

Check out the extension here

Password managing for iPhone

Looks like 1Password for iPhone’s been released. Now I wonder when will we have Roboform for iPhone? Or should we start working on a Roboform -> 1Password for Mac -> 1Password for iPhone sync mechanism?

Hmmm…

Update

First time in many months I took time to update the site and update Wordpress. Motivation? Wordpress application for the iPhone. (Existing version was too old to support the phone app.) Yep, geeky…

Historically I’ve been extremely bad about updating this site or the blog. But who knows, maybe now that I have a nifty little app on my slick pocket device, things might change? We shall come back to this topic in 6 months or so.

Btw, as you can tell from the post below, I can now post pictures directly from Anywhere, 3G-land. Cool? More like it’s about time ;) Wordpress iPhone app? Excellent.

Cheers.
